Mumbai feeds 20 million people every day and somehow makes it delicious. This is my route — from predawn dabbawala chai to 2am bhurji. No breaks.

Dadar to Crawford Market — Morning Crawl

1
See

Dadar Flower Market (5am)

Not food, but the 5am flower market at Dadar is staggeringly beautiful and the energy of pre-dawn Mumbai is the best alarm clock imaginable.

2
Eat

Aaswad, Dadar (Poha & Misal)

The best Maharashtrian breakfast in Mumbai. Get the misal pav — spicy sprouted moth bean curry with pav. Queue starts at 7am. It's worth 45 minutes.

✦ Creator's tip

Ask for "tarri" (extra spicy broth on the side). Most people don't know to ask. It transforms the dish.

3
Shop

Crawford Market (Mahatma Phule Market)

The wholesale fruit and spice market under a Victorian Gothic building. The mango section in summer is an art installation. Dry fruits cheapest here in bulk.

4
Eat

Mohammed Ali Road Minara Masjid Area

During Ramadan this is a 24hr food festival. But even outside Ramadan: Noor Mohammadi for mutton nalli nihari, Suleiman Usman Mithaiwala for mawa jalebis. Arrive hungry.

✦ Creator's tip

Go on Friday afternoon when the area is most alive. Share an auto from CST station — ₹50.

Chowpatty to Dharavi Kitchen Tour

1
Eat

Juhu Beach Bhelpuri (Morning)

Mumbai bhelpuri is not like Delhi bhelpuri. Crunchier, with more tamarind. The stalls at Juhu have been here for 40 years. Best at 8am before it gets humid.

2
See

Dharavi Kitchen Tour

Reality Tours runs a cooking-focused Dharavi experience. You're in a home kitchen by 11am, making masala with the women who feed Dharavi's 700,000 residents every day.

✦ Creator's tip

Book Reality Tours 48hrs in advance. The cooking module is optional but don't skip it — it's the whole point.

3
Eat

Café Madras, Matunga (South Indian Lunch)

Mumbai's best South Indian food is in Matunga, not in South Bombay. Café Madras has been open since 1940. The rava masala dosa and filter coffee are non-negotiable.

4
Eat

Chowpatty Beach (Vada Pav & Pani Puri)

Sunset and street food — the Mumbai combination. Bhelwala Siddharth has been here for 25 years. The pani puri flavoured with green kokum water is specific to this stall.

5
Eat

Bademiya, Colaba (Late Night Seekh Kabab)

Midnight seekh kababs on a street corner behind Taj Hotel. Outdoor seating, charcoal smoke, everyone from drunk tourists to local families at 1am. Cash only.

✦ Creator's tip

Order the roomali roll (seekh wrapped in thin bread). The boti roll is also excellent. Avoid the overcrowded stall — the smaller cart 10m away has the same quality and no wait.
