“Altitude, attitude, and monasteries.”
“Cold desert. Buddhist villages. Roads that disappear under snow. Spiti is the most remote place I've been in India — and the most beautiful.”
Take the 6am HRTC bus to Reckong Peo. 9 hours, ₹380. Window seat on the left for Sutlej valley views.
En route stop. If you're here Aug–Sep, the roadside apple stalls have the sweetest Himachali apples you'll ever eat.
✦ Creator's tip
Don't buy from the main road stalls — walk 200m back into the orchards and buy direct from farmers at half the price.
Overnight here. The town has the last good ATM before Spiti — withdraw enough for 6 days.
✦ Creator's tip
Hotel Kinner Castle has a rooftop with views of Kinner Kailash at sunrise. Ask for a top-floor room.
A tiny village perched on a cliff at 3,662m with a green lake in the centre. Walk the kora (circumambulation path) around it.
✦ Creator's tip
The gompa here has 1,000-year-old murals. Ask the monk to open it — small donation expected.
Where the Spiti River makes a dramatic bend through a rainbow-coloured canyon. You'll want your camera ready for 10 minutes straight.
The "Ajanta of the Himalayas" — 1,000-year-old murals still intact. The finest Buddhist art in India, and almost no tourists.
✦ Creator's tip
Stay in the monastery guesthouse for ₹500/night. Monks wake at 5am and the chanting through the walls is otherworldly.
A monastery literally balanced on a eroding cliff. The 45-min hike up from the road is steep but the view of the Pin-Spiti confluence is worth every step.
Snow leopard territory. The best time to spot one is Feb–March in winter, but even in summer the ibex sightings are frequent.
✦ Creator's tip
Hire local guide Tenzin from Mudh village (ask at the checkpoint). He's found 3 snow leopards on walks this year.
The last village in Pin Valley. Stay with a local family — dal-chawal, butter tea, and Spiti sky full of stars.
The "capital" of Spiti. Permits for restricted areas, SIM top-ups, and the best espresso I've had above 3,000m at Cafe Kunzum.
The iconic postcard of Spiti — a mud-brick fortress monastery at 4,166m. Morning puja at 6am; guests welcome.
✦ Creator's tip
Wear layers. Even in summer it's 5°C inside the prayer hall. The butter-lamp room smells incredible.
One of the highest motorable villages in the world at 4,270m. The vibe is completely peaceful — just monks, dogs, and wind.
Crescent-shaped glacial lake at 4,300m. The water is so blue it looks fake. 4WD required to get here — book a shared jeep from Kaza (₹500pp).
✦ Creator's tip
Camping is allowed on the far bank (not near the lake itself per new rules). Carry all food and firewood from Kaza.
The only dhaba at the Batal crossroads. Dal-chawal and chai. It's been here for 30 years and the uncle running it has seen everything.
Watershed between Lahaul and Spiti. The prayer flags here stretch for 200m. Touch the idol for safe passage — everyone does.
Often snowed in even in July. Permits required — get it online at rohtangpermit.nic.in the evening before.
Back to civilization. The first hot shower after Spiti is the greatest shower of your life.
