Birth and death and everything between, happening simultaneously on the same 7km stretch of ghats. Varanasi is not a city — it's an experience that takes weeks to process.

First Morning: The Ghats at Dawn

1
See

Assi Ghat

Start here at 5am for morning aarti. Less crowded than Dashashwamedh, more spiritual. Watch the diyas float downstream as the sun rises over the Ganga.

✦ Creator's tip

Rent a rowboat (₹200 for an hour) from the ghat boatmen — no engine noise, just oars. The ghats from the river at dawn is a completely different world.

2
See

Tulsi Ghat & Kedar Ghat

Walk the ghats north at sunrise. Each ghat has its own caste, its own deity, its own rhythm. Kedar Ghat has a south Indian feel — good for a quiet moment.

3
Eat

Blue Lassi Shop

Tiny shop near Vishwanath Gali, run by the same family for 80 years. The rose-thandai lassi is transcendent. Queue before 9am.

✦ Creator's tip

They don't take orders — just tell them "one lassi" and they hand you what's freshest. Trust the process.

Day 2
4 stops

Old City & Temples

1
See

Kashi Vishwanath Temple

One of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Leave your phone at the guesthouse — no cameras allowed. The queue is worth it, especially for darshan at 3am during Mangala Aarti.

2
See

Vishwanath Gali (The Lanes)

Get lost in the labyrinthine alleys of the old city. Every corner has a chai wallah, a silk shop, or a 500-year-old temple tucked in. Do not follow touts.

✦ Creator's tip

Learn "nahi chahiye" (I don't want it). Say it firmly, keep walking. Most touts give up after 10 seconds.

3
See

Dashashwamedh Ghat Evening Aarti

The main Ganga aarti at 7pm. 7 priests, fire, flowers, and 10,000 people watching. Get there by 6pm for a good spot on the steps.

✦ Creator's tip

Don't pay the "donation" touts who promise you a "special view". The free standing area is equally good.

4
Eat

Baati Chokha

Authentic UP thali — baati (baked wheat balls), chokha (smashed potato-tomato), dal. Earthy, filling, ₹250. On Shivala Ghat road.

Sarnath Day Trip

1
See

Sarnath

12km from Varanasi. Where Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment. The Dhamek Stupa is 1,500 years old and still standing. ₹40 entry.

2
See

Sarnath Archaeological Museum

Houses the Lion Capital of Ashoka — the original, not a replica. India's national emblem, in person. The museum is small but the quality is stunning.

3
See

Mungra Badshahpur Sunset Boat Ride

Evening boat ride back toward Varanasi at sunset. The 3km of lit ghats from the water is one of the most beautiful sights in India.

Day 4

Silk & Departure

1
Shop

Banarasi Silk Weavers (Shivala)

Varanasi silk is a UNESCO heritage craft. Visit a loom workshop before buying — you'll never buy from tourist shops again once you've seen how it's made.

✦ Creator's tip

The weavers in Shivala locality sell direct. Quality for 40% less than Chowk shops. Ask at your guesthouse for a connection.

2
See

Manikarnika Ghat

The burning ghat. Cremations run 24/7. Observe from a respectful distance — photography strictly forbidden. Spend 15 minutes in silence here. You'll carry it with you forever.

3
Go

Varanasi Junction Railway Station

Kashi Express to Delhi (14hrs), Mahanagari Express to Mumbai (27hrs). The chai on the platform is a final ritual.
